He was the pioneer of Afrobeat, and a great showman, who has been called “the James Brown of Africa”. He contracted the AIDS virus and died in 1997, but his legacy lives on through the music of his sons Seun and Femi Kuti, and through the musical “Fela!”, inspired by his life and work.
